Kitchen Carts - For Mother's Day Breakfast
By Jennifer Akre

Mom In The Kitchen Video
Last year my mother approached me and asked if I wanted to go in with her and get my grandmother - her mom - a Mother's Day gift. "Sure!" I thought. My mom suggested a kitchen cart, and I agreed that it was a perfect idea. I have many memories of my grandmother in the kitchen, baking and cooking and enjoying herself. She warmly welcomed our gift into her routine and quickly found many uses for it.

Mom In The Kitchen Video
Kitchen carts are available in several stores specializing in home appliances and home décor. You can also search online for those unique kitchen carts found nowhere else. They can be priced to suit everybody's budget, whether you have a large amount to spend or are looking for a large amount to save.

They are extremely versatile and functional in all kitchens. They come in many different styles and can easily fit into a corner or serve as an island. They can be constructed of sturdy wood. Some prefer the stainless steel models because of their contemporary appearance and ease of cleaning.

Mom In The Kitchen Video
You can prepare food on a kitchen cart. Many even come with a butcher's block or stainless steel on top to add to this idea. You can easily store knives or other utensils in the cart's additional drawers. Many also come with additional shelving and cabinets underneath, serving as perfect spots for your bowls, recipe books, or decorative storage canisters.

Some people double their kitchen cart as a microwave stand in order to save space. This also works well. If you prefer not to use it this way, consider placing a decorative bowl of fruit on top when not is use.

Another option for you is to use your cart as serving stand. For example, when having a dinner party, consider using your cart as a salad bar, and arrange on top the leafy greens, vegetables, dressings, and toppings. Then it can easily be tucked away after the meal. Perhaps at a child's birthday party, your cart can stand in as an ice cream station. Simply load the cart with goodies, wheel to the table, serve the children amid squeal of delight, then wheel it out of sight.

Mom In The Kitchen Video
Perhaps the best idea involving using one as a serving stand is to prepare a special Mother's Day breakfast. Surprise that wonderful woman in your life with breakfast in bed. Prepare a tasty meal, serve it on nice platters, and wheel the cart into the bedroom. This is also the perfect time to surprise her with the gift of a new kitchen cart, and she can appreciate it immediately.

Giving my grandmother a kitchen cart for Mother's Day was such a great idea. She instantly appreciated its versatility and usefulness. I think this year will be my mother's turn to receive this wonderful kitchen accessory. This year, if you are wondering how to show your mother how she is appreciated, consider finding a kitchen cart to suit her kitchen and her cooking needs.

Tips For Healthy Cooking With Kids
By Peg Baron

Real Mom KitchenCooking is one of the most enjoyable activities that parents can do with their kids. Every child should experience the fun of creating healthy meals in the kitchen and it should not be a place reserved just for mom.

Real Mom KitchenHealthy cooking with kids is beneficial to both parents and kids. Children can learn essential living skills such as how to cook and how to be organized. They can also apply the knowledge that they have learned in school; for example addition and subtraction in math. Moms can ask simple questions such as, "If we are serving one muffin per guest and we have five guests, how many muffins should we bake?" This type of question is fun for kids and they get to use math in a real world way. As the kids get older they can learn about ratio, weight, and even science in the kitchen.

Real Mom KitchenWhen kids are given simple tasks like spreading jam on bread using a blunt knife, it lets them practice using their eyes and hand and helps improve their motor skills and coordination. By completing each task, the kids will gain more confidence and they will become independent because they know they can do anything if they put their mind to it.

Parents who practice healthy cooking with their kids are spending quality time with them while doing something fun. This is a great opportunity for parents to communicate and interact more with their children, thus strengthening the family relationship. Encourage the kids to ask questions during the cooking activity so they can understand better the process of cooking.

Real Mom KitchenAfter the kids have completed their tasks; such as cutting vegetables or peeling potatoes, remember to compliment them for doing their jobs well. We adults love compliments and kids feel the same way too. This will definitely boost their confidence.

Children are more likely to eat what they have prepared or cooked. This is a chance for parents to introduce new food to their children who are picky eaters. If they do not like their greens, let them pick a salad recipe and prepare it. Give them options to add things like dried cranberries, mandarin oranges, small goldfish crackers, etc. Make fun, colorful desserts together such as berries with yogurt.

Real Mom KitchenYour kids will be so proud of the food they've prepared so keep that in mind when you eat it, even if it looks a little "funny." Parents can also encourage their children's inner chef to prepare their own lunch box for school. Steer them in the direction of interesting ways to prepare healthy food when they're young and they may learn to love their veggies. In other words, they can learn healthy eating habits through learning how to cook healthy food.

Parents cooking with their kids can be a weekly activity. By having our kids help us in the kitchen, they will learn some of the necessary skills to succeed in life and who knows, they may become the best chefs in the world.

Building the Perfect Outdoor Kitchen - Where to Start?
By Jason Whitney

Kitchen With MomWhen taking on the task of building the perfect outdoor kitchen, the one thing that comes to mind is the appliances that are a part of the kitchen to come. The right gas grills, fireplace, oven, barbeque, and even the fire pits, can make the difference between an outdoor kitchen you love and use all the time, or a kitchen that is the source of frustration and problems.

Aside from the seat cushions for your patio furniture, let's examine the ingredients that go into building the perfect outdoor kitchen. The first thing you want to do is get a hold of some photographs that show your ideal kitchen or kitchen possibilities. Decide what style of cabinets and island you will want to reflect the image you are going for. The next thing is to get some designs and create a set of plans that will make your outdoor kitchen a place where you will want to spend your time. Lowe's and the Home Depot are great places to get some ideas and advice on how to build the kitchen you want. They also have some great appliances and brands that will be a great asset to your investment.

Kitchen With MomThere are some great barbecue gas grills and they come with some amazing features and come in a variety of price ranges. First you have your basic Char Broil quickset grill. Two wheels roll it in for a fast portable grilling experience. Not too many features, but just what is needed to get the job done. Another type of grill comes from the Weber commercial series. this is a do it all grill and the features are amazing. it has a stove and a griddle, comes in stainless steel and has the ability for use with propane or natural gas. A really nice way to go is with a built in island grill. This has everything you need for building the perfect outdoor kitchen.

When Building The Perfect Outdoor Kitchen, appliances are a great asset, even to having an oven outdoors. This is a great way to keep your house cool during the summer and allow mom to be outside instead of chained to the indoor kitchen. The cabinets can be wood or granite, depending on your style, and the oven and grill and even fire pits can be easily inserted to make the whole place come together with elegance. The right ingredients definitely make the perfect outdoor kitchen.

For the Every Day Cook, a Must Have in Your Kitchen is a Microwave - A Commercial Microwave That Is
By Victoria Graham

Moms In The KitchenToday, microwaves are regarded as absolute essentials in the kitchen. In fact, it would be impossible for you to find a normal American kitchen without a microwave of its own. Other than the convenience this machine is offering, you would also get a lot of other benefits from this wonderful machine. Not only you would get to prepare food fast, you also would not have to worry about poorly cooked dishes and you would also not have to deal with a lot of mess.
Before microwaves came about, people had no choice but to trust their ever reliable kitchen stoves. After all, stoves are really great kitchen tools. However, as kitchen technology progressed, microwaves were invented and have now become a permanent part of the kitchen. Any American would agree that without a microwave in the kitchen would really make it seem bear.

Moms In The KitchenEven rooms in dormitories have one. Having a microwave in rooms of students is actually a great idea. With the packed schedules of these university students, it would be impossible for them to cook using a stove. The power of a microwave could make cooking twice as fast and without causing a lot of mess. We know how these students are with their rooms and kitchen mess would make it all worse. The space that is occupied by microwave ovens is less than ordinary kitchen stoves so students would still have a lot of room for their books and other stuffs for school.

A busy person would also benefit greatly from microwaves. For someone who has a regular job, it would be hard to still have to wait for a long time for food to be cooked. Since microwaves can cook food a lot faster and is also great for reheating, a hungry office person would not have to suffer for long.

Moms In The KitchenOf course, those that would benefit from this invention are busy kitchen moms. A microwave could cut three hours of cooking time to just two. Further, microwaves are really easy to use. Just push the buttons to set the time and wait for the alarm to ring. Even mothers who claim to be not fond of high technology would not have problems operating a moicrowife.

Five Steps to Managing Your Day At Home Mom
By Susan Burks

Mom And Son KitchenIf you work INSIDE the home, you know how hard it can be to stay on track and not get distracted with a domestic "to-do" list.

Here are five simple rules to follow when you are work at home.

Mom And Son Kitchen#1: Give Yourself Attention FIRST. Take just 10 minutes to have some tea, quiet time, or meditation. This will really helps to clear your mind and help you focus for the day.

Step 2: Get DRESSED. I made the mistake early on to work in my pajamas. I found that my attitude changed once I actually showered and put on "non-ratty" clothing.

Mom And Son KitchenStep 3: Stay on a schedule. This most difficult. It is so easy to get up from your desk to throw in laundry or clean up the kitchen, etc. The key for me is to pretend that my office is miles away from home. Then, I can disassociate myself from a stay at home mom / work at home mom. I have time for lunch on my calendar, time for my son when he comes home from school, and time to shut down. By the way, I even schedule time for laundry!

Step 4: Quit when it is quitting time. The easiest way to lose the balance in your work/home life is to ignore the structure you set for yourself. If you are scheduled to end your day at 5:00 PM, then end your day at 5:00 PM. Walk away and close the office door. Turn the ringer off of your office phone and don't look back! The you biggest mistake you can make is being "open" all the time. Address it early on.

Step 5: Detox each day. Give yourself, your family ALL of you at the end of each day. Stop being a working mom and be a mom/wife. Be fully present when you are done with work.

Mom's Big Book of Baking
By Judy Scuderi

Moms In KitchenLauren Chattman has written a delightful new book called Mom's Big Book of Baking: 200 Simple, Foolproof Family Favorites for BirthdayParties, Bake Sales, and More. Like many moms I have a very hectic schedule and to be totally truthful here, the kitchen is really not a safe or a friendly place for me. I have discovered, however, that Lauren Chattman's baking recipes really are easy and even I can make them.

Moms In KitchenThe book is divided into seven sections: Beyond the Freezer Case: Homemade Pancakes and Waffles; Mom's Cafe: Muffins, Quick Breads, Biscuits and Scones; The Cookie Jar: Old Fashioned Cookies Mom's Way; Easy-Bake Oven: Keeping it Simple with Brownies and Bard; Mom's Apple Pie: No-Fail Pies, Tarts, Quiches, and Cobblers; Birthdays and Beyond: Cakes for All Occasions; and Yeast is Your Friend: Basic Bread and Pizza.

Moms In KitchenI love cake - I can't help myself. But I don't like just any kind of cake. It has to be yellow cake. So I thought I would try making the classic yellow layer cake (or cupcakes) from the chapter on Birthdays and Beyond. I chose to make cupcakes rather than a cake because I felt more comfortable with my cupcake tins than I did with my cake pans. The recipe was so easy that I couldn't believe my luck. No cupcake would go to a party without frosting so I topped off my freshly baked goods with vanilla birthday cake frosting. I just love a party! My friends could not believe my new found talent.

I was feeling very confident in the dessert category so I decided to make my son some spiced apple and raisin turnovers form the chapter on Mom's Apple Pie. The sweet pie dough recipe was easy to prepare as was the filling. My kitchen smelled divine as the turnovers were baking. The turnovers are a keeper.

I invited my best friend (and her waffle maker) over for Sunday breakfast a few weeks ago so we could try out one of the waffle recipes from the Beyond the Freezer Case section of the book. After much deliberation we choose gingerbread waffles. I think I may have a new career here and my list of new friends is steadily growing.

I plan to do a lot more baking in the coming weeks. On my list to try are pan pizza dough, savory cornbread, oatmeal cookies, and instant homemade microwave brownies.

Moms In KitchenI appreciated the time saving tips and techniques that were offered in each chapter as well as as the information on mail-order and online resource. The only complaint I have about this book is that it did not contain color photos of the recipes - a feature I really appreciate since I am a real novice in the kitchen..

Mom's Boiled Custard For Christmas
By Bob Alexander

Mom And Son KitchenMy involvement with food began at an early age. Eating to survive was a given, but my mother gave new meaning to the word "delicious" during the holiday season. This is when she would cook cookies, cakes and pies for Christmas celebrations. My favorite though was her boiled custard and red velvet cake! There was a silent contest each year between my mother and my Aunt Helen as to who had the best tasting boiled custard. None of us would declare a winner for fear the loser wouldn't make the dessert next year. The contest was always a draw.

Mom And Son KitchenMom felt it was her duty to make this year's cake and custard better than the year before! She would get up early on Christmas morning, long before we unwrapped presents from Santa, lay out the ingredients and start to work. She usually had the kitchen to herself at that time of the morning. Even though it was Christmas day, she was up even before us kids, preparing for the family and friends coming over for Christmas dinner. I well remember the aromas from the kitchen as we awoke on special morning.

Mom And Son KitchenHere are my mother's recipes for boiled custard, minus the love, care and devotion to perfection she added to the ingredients. You have to supply that yourself.

Showing Your Mom Just How Much you Care
By Anne Harvester

Mom In The KitchenYour mother has done a lot to make sure that your life was great as you were a child growing up. Now that Mother's Day is just around the corner is the time to remember Mom with a special Mother's Day gift to show that you care.

Mother's Day gift baskets make a fantastic present for your mother because they can be personalized to include the things that she especially enjoys. Perhaps your mother could use a day at the spa. Why not give her that pleasure in the comfort of her own home, with a gift basket focused on a spa theme. You could include such items as fancy bath soaps and gels, as well as moisturizers, massage oils, bathing sponges and more for her enjoyment.

Mom In The KitchenIf Mom is into sports, a sports-themed basket is something that she will enjoy. Let's say that she loves to golf. You could include a new attractive visor, some golfing gloves, golf balls and tees, and a great pair of sunglasses along with wonderfully scented sunscreen in a basket focused on a golfing theme. Because the gifts in the basket center around one of your mother's favorite hobbies, this will help to show her that you took the time to think about what she will enjoy and then put them all together in a beautiful basket.

Mom In The KitchenYour mother would definitely appreciate a gift basket that featured gourmet foods and cooking items if she is a foodie, or just likes to eat delicious foods. Beautiful tins of caviar, anchovies, and thin water crackers, along with jars of Kalamata olives and Nicoise olives will make her mouth water. Adding a great bottle of Merlot or Cabernet Sauvingon would make a spectacular focus to this type of gift basket with a Mediterranean foods theme.

Mom In The KitchenMaybe your mother is a stir-fry lover. Why not include all of the wonderful components to a super Pad Thai? You could include lovely packages of rice noodles, peanuts, as well as some of the seasonings like ginger, and spicy oils, including toasted sesame oil, which will bring the meal to life. The addition of napkins and chop sticks, even some lovely decorative bowls in which to serve the food, could all be in keeping with a Thai-themed gift basket, one that your mother is sure to love.

Mom In The KitchenIf Mom likes to cook, she can always use some interesting kitchen gadgets. A citrus zester with a comfortable handle and sharp blades is always popular. A new garlic press comes in handy, as does a screwy louie to remove lids from jars with ease. Decorative hot pads and kitchen towels would set this basket off in style, and show your mother that you care.

How to Keep Children Safe in the Kitchen
By Jessica Chamberlain

Son Mom KitchenThe kitchen is a wonderful place where memories are made for every day dinners and special holiday gatherings but it can also spell disaster for little ones. There are things that you need to consider when you have a little on to keep them extra safe around kitchen dangers.

Son Mom Kitchen* Always keep your children away from the area where you are cooking and appliances that become hot when turned on.
* If you have to leave the kitchen to answer the door, the phone, go to the restroom etc make sure you turn everything off and push it away from the edge because little curious children can easily get hurt.
* Always use the back burners on your stove so a child can not reach up and grab or touch a boiling pot of water or skillet.
* Make sure your children are seated away from the stove and sink so you do not trip over them or their toys while you are taking boiling water to the sink to drain.
* Always keep forks, knives and other sharp utensils out of reach on the counter or in a locked drawer or cabinet.
* Avoid tablecloths if you can. Kids can grab the hanging edges and pull items on the table down onto their heads.
* Lock all cabinets and/or drawers that contain cooking oils, spices and most definitely cleaning supplies.
* Have the number for Poison Control posted in case of a poison accident.
* Always make sure that your child is fastened securely into their high chair or booster seat so they do not tumble.
* Never leave your child unattended while they eat because they can easily choke.
* Test any and all foods and drinks that you give your child to make sure that they do not burn the inside of their mouth. All of these things are very easy to do and save can your child from accidents, burns or much worse.

Teaching Responsibility to a Toddler - Yes, Two-Year Olds Can Learn Responsibility
By Carol Knopf

Mom Son In KitchenTerry pounded his fist on the table. At two, Terry had already learned the power of a child. Throw a tantrum and get some attention. But Terry's mom was 22 and she knew a few things too. "I know you're hungry and we're going to have breakfast in a minute, just as soon as we make certain Ralphie is fed." Terry's look of defiance began to wither pretty fast at the mention of Ralphie. For the last two weeks, before breakfast and dinner, Terry had been putting a tiny scoop of food in Ralphie's bowl. Then he poured some water in Ralphie's water bowl. Some of the water always spilled on the kitchen floor but mom didn't get angry. She said it was okay as long as Ralphie had fresh water.

Mom Son In KitchenAs Terry toddled off on floppy legs to the drawer with the cat food, Gina, Terry's mom, gave him a big grin. When the kernels of dry food hit the bowl and Ralphie ran over to eat, Gina praised Terry, "That's great Terry; now Ralphie can have his breakfast too. Boy, he looks like he was really hungry." She handed Terry a paper cup with water and Terry dumped it into Ralphie's water bowl, as usual getting about half in the bowl and the rest on the kitchen floor.

Mom Son In KitchenWith Ralphie fed, it was time for Terry to eat. As he shoveled scrambled eggs into his mouth, Gina looked on with pride. Terry was learning to take care of his cat, a lesson that will serve him well throughout his life.

It takes some work to teach responsibility to a young child. But the time spent is well worth it. When I worked for the courts in Ventura County, I introduced my oldest son to one of the sitting judges. As my son conversed with the judge, I walked over to speak with our mutual secretary. When I returned, my son told me it was time for him to get going; he had a college class that night. He shook hands with the judge, gave me a peck on the cheek and left.

Mom Son In KitchenAfter my son left, the judge looked at me in amazement. "How did you do that?" he asked. "Did what," I said. "Your son is still in his teens and he's so responsible. He goes to college and has three part-time jobs. Mine's in his twenties and lays around the house."

I explained that because I was divorced, my kids had to take on a lot of chores. Although even without the divorce, they would have had to take them on. One thing my ex-husband and I agreed on was that our sons would have to pay their own car insurance. That way they'd have to be responsible if they got a ticket or in an accident, not just for the incident, but for the increased insurance. My sons always understood that everyone in the family had jobs to do, including them.

When one of my sons asked for a video game set, I told him I wasn't going to pay all that money for video games. "But you can afford it," he whined. "Yes, but I don't want it; you do. If you want the game, go earn the money." And he did. He got a part-time job, earned the money and bought the video game set.

That same son has his own child now. And one of my grandson's jobs, at the ripe old age of 2 1/2, is to feed his puppy. He knows his dog needs food and water, just like he does. Of course, sometimes, my grandson goes a little over the top, like the time he decided it was okay for him to share his yogurt with his dog - using the same spoon. While my daughter-in-law praised the generosity, she nixed the sharing a spoon idea. But too much generosity is rarely a problem.

Mom Son In KitchenActually, my son and daughter-in-law have gone me one better. The last time I visited, I asked my grandson to get a book so I could read to him. He took the toy he had been playing with and put it in the toy cabinet. Then he opened another door and took out a favorite book for me to read him. He closed the door and climbed onto the couch to sit with me. After I read him the book, my grandson took the book and put it back in the cabinet, carefully closing the door. I looked at my daughter-in-law in amazement. "He does that all the time. That's what we taught him."

So the next time you find yourself picking up after your kids, take a moment and think; what will they do when you aren't around to pick up. And why should you be picking up after them anyway?

Crockpot Recipes - A Busy Mom's Life Saver
By Amber Torija

Mom In KitchenIf you are a busy mom like me, you probably dread coming home after a long day and making a big dinner for your family. We usually just make the same old think, day after day and week after week. How to we get out of those same old same old blues, you should make your Crockpot become your best friend. When cooking with a Crockpot you can easily prepare the meal the night before start the Crockpot in the morning before you head out for work and have a hot, delicious home cooked meal waiting for you when you come home.

Mom In KitchenThere are many different variations of crackpots out there, and really any of them will do. You can easily purchase one for about ten to fifteen dollars for a basic one. Mine I bought for about 30 dollars but the convince factor of it truly makes up for the cost. Mine is large enough to hold a large roast or chicken, it has a high, medium, low and warm setting. It also has an automatic shut off time for when the meal will be done and sets it on warm waiting for you. It also has a removable insert that is dishwasher safe that is a definite plus. You also can purchase slow cooker bags (much like turkey roasting bags) that minimize clean up.

Mom In KitchenOne of my favorite meals on a cold winter day is beef stew. It is hardier then a soup, and fills you up. Here is an old classic recipe my mother gave me that I use in my Crockpot.

Slow Cooker Beef Stew:

Ingredients:
1 ½ pounds of beef stew meet 1 inch cubed (usually can purchase pre cut at your grocery store)
12 baby carrots (or 4 medium carrots peeled and cut into 1 inch pieces)
4 white potatoes peeled and cut in chunks
1 onion peeled and quarters
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 beef bouillon cubes
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
2 bay leaves
½ tsp thyme
¼ tsp garlic powder
2 cups of beef broth
1 cup of water
3 tbsp flour

Mom In Kitchen
To start brown meat in a skillet in oil until lightly brown on the out side (do not cook all the way through). This step can be skipped if desired, but browning the meat locks in the flavor. In the Crockpot layer carrots, potatoes, onions and browned meat, as a note you should always place your vegetables on the bottom of the Crockpot. Add the Worcestershire sauce, beef bullion and all of the spices (except flour). Pour in broth and water to cover the vegetables and meat. Cook on low temp for 8 to 10 hours or on high for 4 to 5 hours. About 30 minutes before you are ready to eat, remove the bay leaves, mix together in a separate bowl the flour and about 1/3 cup of water, add to Crockpot and mix to thicken and make more of a gravy vice broth. Turn the Crockpot up to high and continue to cook an additional 30 minutes. Serve and enjoy.

Mom In KitchenA warm French bread, you can pick up at any grocery store or some dinner rolls go perfect with this stew.

When it comes to cooking with your Crockpot here are some hints. You can brown meat to lock in the flavors, if you choose not to add 30 minutes to your cooking time to ensure the meat is cooked through. Always place your vegetables on the bottom of the slow cooker so they cook properly. Never open the Crockpot to stir or taste, the heat will escape and you will have to add additional cooking time. The taste of spices are intensified because they cook off slowly, taste your meal 30 minutes before serving if it needs extra flavor add it at this point. And finally, if you need to cook your meal in a faster amount of time, place a piece of tin foil below the lid, it will reflect the heat back down on your meal and it will cook quicker.

Surprise your family with a hardy home cooked meal that makes it seam like you slaved all day in the kitchen. There are many recipes that are quick and easy to make, that will save you time and money and make you a super mom in the kitchen.
